Mamak

6:29pm Tuesday 31 August 2010 Sydney (gmt+10)

This is the second time Sheila and I went to Mamak. And to beat the queue we turned up at 5pm. They don't open 'til 5:30pm, but when we got there there were already two dozen people lined up. And this was on a Monday and not a weekend. When they finally opened there were even more people waiting. Lucky for us there were just enough tables. The ones who arrived at the queue after us weren't so lucky. They had to wait 'til a table finishes.

I think what attracts people to go to Mamak is its simplicity. The menu is short and the items are very cheap. They focus on Roti, which is their specialty. And the design of the restaurant is very informal, very homey, very comfortable. The show kitchen is also very inviting. You can see how they make the Roti, and you're assured that it is fresh and that it is prepared in a clean environment. And it also keeps the people lined up outside entertained 'coz they can see the cooks in action.

And the food also takes very little time to be ready. Within minutes of ordering we received the Nasi Goreng and the Chicken Curry, which are both very aromatic. You can almost smell them coming towards your table. Seconds later we got the Spinach with Shrimp Paste and Chili. And I got my favorite, the Satay Chicken.

As is, the skewered chicken is already very tasty. But once you dip it in the Satay sauce it tastes even better. The sauce is so yummy that I always mix what's left with my rice. And I will order more rice if I have to. It's too good to waste! Then we received the Roti Canai, which is the plain, original Roti. It comes with two curry sauces, plus a tiny dab of the yummy Satay Sauce. It's so fresh and fluffy... it's like eating cotton candy with crispy bits!

Then we told the waitress that we're ready for dessert. And we could see from our table the Roti Tisu that we ordered. Within moments of leaving the flat grill it made its way to our table! At first we didn't know what it was called. All we could think of was that it looked like a Party Hat! And Sheila made that clear by putting it over her head! It was tall, crispy, with just the right sweetness. One scoop of ice cream didn't feel enough, but neither would a whole bucket 'coz the Roti Tisu was so good!

It's gotta be one of the nicest places that we've been to in a while. And like all the other food destinations that people flock to, Mamak's food and ambiance and service is definitely worth lining up for.
