Sydney Lockdown

Sunday 9 September 2007 - 20:34 (gmt +10 / Sydney)

Sydney hosted this year's APEC summit... and as expected, most of the city is in lockdown mode. I didn't go out yesterday and on Friday because of the numerous protests around town. But today's a lot quieter because the summit itself is already being wrapped up.

It's not the Sydney that a lot of people are used to. Within the northern half of the city there's an elaborate system of fences that restricted public access to within a few pathways only. Getting around was like trying to find your way through a maze.

Aside from the hundreds of Police officers on foot there were also several helicopters hovering above the buildings. And there were also dozens of  Purple colored Police cars. Yes... they're Purple. Hehehe!

And consistent with the security measures that were implemented during the 2000 Olympics, most of the trash cans were wrapped and sealed.

I guess they think it's a good idea because it definitely prevented bombs from being planted in the bins. But the funny thing is that they forgot to wrap and seal a lot of bins that are actually along the fences and other sensitive areas (ie. in front of hotels) within the restricted zone. Oh well.
