Getting Around

Tuesday 3 April 2007 - 22:48 (gmt - 8 / San Francisco)

I'm staying at my Aunt's place in Union City. It takes me about an hour and a half to get to San Francisco's city center. The transport system here is reliable, but the buses and trains don't operate as frequently as they do in Sydney. I guess here in California most still prefer to drive rather than commute.

The bus drivers are very friendly. I guess it's because they really don't get that busy. I mean, most of the time there's hardly anyone onboard. If you're lost then you need not worry because you can ask them anything, that is... provided they're not using their cell phone. Hehehe! The trains are quite comfortable, and doesn't really get cramped except during rush hour. And the views are very picturesque, with all the green hills and wide open fields. It's very relaxing, especially the  route that I travel in which is the Fremont line.

Once I reach San Francisco itself I prefer to go around on foot because it gives me the chance to really enjoy not just the scenery but the very atmosphere of the city itself.. But if I have to be somewhere at a given time or if I simply don't feel like walking I use the F-Market Streetcar, which is part of the MUNI. It's a really good deal, because US$1.50 buys me a ticket that I can use on the trams, buses and subway within the city for most of the day.

But the Cable Cars are not included. They're US$5 each time you ride. I don't want to travel in them anyway because their seats are really uncomfortable plus you hardly get any protection from the elements. And also they are often packed with tourists. Not my kind of crowd. Hehehe!
