Yum Cha

Ah yes... it's Yum Cha time again! Can't get enough of these little parcels packed with goodies! :) You can tell that they're really fresh by the fact that they don't stick to the basket nor the plate.

I don't see this often. It's scallops, shiitake mushrooms, baby corn and carrot rolled in cabbage. Nice! And this is something worth trying. Outside it looks like baby pumpkin. But wait 'till you take a bite! Yum!
And for more sweets I went to the Lindt Café. Mmmmm... It's their famous chocolate dome... so devilishly delicious!
This is a chilled mocha with ice-cream. I think I can finish 10 of this. Anyway, enough talk! 1 minute later... this is all that's left of my chilled mocha and chocolate dome. Burp! :)
Afterwards I watched the Violin Girl do her stuff. She's really good!

Yum Cha, Lindt And The Violin Girl

Saturday 4 February 2006 - 23:21 [gmt+10]

Last week Jan and I went out around the city and tried all sorts of food and drinks, just about everything except Chinese. Which is why today I thought I'd go for Yum Cha. And of course it was befitting since it's the Chinese New Year's week.

The food at Sky Phoenix was great as usual! The pumpkin was particularly delightful. I never tried it before, but today they gave it to me for free. I guess it's because I visit them on a regular basis, or maybe it's because it's their New Year so they're feeling generous. Anyway I didn't ask what it was exactly. Sure I can see it's a pumpkin, but Chinese dumplings can sometimes be deceiving as far as appearance is concerned. Plus having to know so much about food and beverage because of my job it's a rare delight for me to come across an item that is mesmerizingly mysterious.

So I tried it, and it turned out to be a dessert. Wow! Obviously it was deep-fried, as with a lot of Chinese desserts. It was very crispy on the outside, but the stuffing was very chewy and flavorsome. I won't describe it any further so I don't spoil the surprise for those of you who are thinking of trying it. :)

Then after lunch I walked up to the Lindt Café. I don't normally go there. If I were to chose a café along Martin Place I'd go to Starbucks. The reason being is that in Starbucks there are sofas, coffee tables, newspapers and comfortable couches which gives it a very laid back and relaxed atmosphere. Lindt on the other hand has bars and outdoor tables plus a dining section where you have to wait to be seated. The flow of food, beverages and people are fast and very systematic... typical of most Swiss establishments. In the former service is non-existent beyond the counter, while the latter has a dozen or so staff serving, answering questions and directing people to the appropriate area depending on what they're looking for which gives the impression of customer care but also of control at the same time.

When I'm having coffee, particularly when I'm not working, I prefer to take my time and have as little interaction with the service staff as possible. But somehow today I felt this insatiable craving for chocolate, which lead me to Lindt. If she reads this then perhaps Kat Mayo wouldn't to be aghast like last time. Hehehe!

Afterwards I sat on a bench along Pitt Street Mall and watched the Violin Girl do her stuff. She's amazing! I never get enough of her music and I always make sure I give her a $5 note or sometimes more. Hmm... I wonder if she's got a website... or a blog. I might ask her next time. Cool! :)
