Going Out With A Flash

I call her Brick-Cam. We shared a lot of great moments together. And today she officially goes into retirement.

I know, it sounds silly that I am dedicating an entire entry to an object. But she's not just another gadget. The fact that I don't refer to her as an "it" means that she's got a lot of sentimental value.

Back in August 2002 I bought a dsc-p51. I was keen on buying a digital camera because it was becoming more and more time consuming to scan photographs. I took a risk because Sony didn't really specialize in cameras then, she's more or less their prototype. Every other Sony digital cameras available today owe their superb features to her design, including my newly purchased dsc-w7... which I haven't named yet.

Her name was coined by one of my friends, who fell victim to my relentless snap-happy tendencies. Irritated because she was being hounded by a one-man-paparazzi, her exact words to me were:

"Why won't you stick that brick cam up your a--?!"

Since then I've taken thousands of images with her of people and places, most of whom I don't see that often anymore. I always had her in my bag, and eventually she accompanied me to work as well... where at one occasion she fell into a big pot of pumpkin soup. Miraculously she wasn't damaged. I also dropped and scratched her dozens of times. Yet up to this day she's still in perfect working condition.

I got to know her well through our time together... the feel of her surface, her different abilities... and her tantrums also. Yes, there were moments when she simply refused to cooperate! And she got to know me as well through the memories that I captured through her lens. Even images of myself, which was a real challenge since I am camera shy. But I managed by hiding behind her. :)

Years fly when you're having fun... and we all have to catch up with the times. A 2 megapixel resolution doesn't cut it anymore.

I definitely won't throw her. I also don't have any plans of giving her away... but if I do then I'll make sure it's someone who knows exactly how much she's worth. For now I'll put her alongside the other cameras that I've had in the past. A sort of hall of fame.

Maybe one day I might take her along with me again. But as of today she is consigned to my past.

All texts are written and all images (including logos and stuff) were either taken or created by me, Marvin... unless indicated otherwise of course. I believe in 'fair use', so depending on how and in what context you intend to use it, if you wish to borrow any material in this website, in part or whole, all you need to do is ask. And if you're nice enough I might even put up a link to your site. Coolness! :)
