Farewell 2005

Saturday 31 December 2005 - 21:02 [gmt+10]

Most weekends I go to this secret Chinese restaurant for Yum-Cha. And I'm never disappointed. The food was great! Yummy!
This is at Circular Quay. Usually you see a lot more of the Harbour Bridge, but they erected those "idiot-proof-barriers" for tonight.

Farewell 2005

Saturday 31 December 2005 - 21:02 [gmt+10]

From where I live I can actually hear the fireworks show. And if I live another dozen or so floors higher I'd be able to see it. I can hear it right now. It's only 9pm, but normally they set off a first batch at this time as a sort of teaser... then at midnight they light everything up.

This is the first New Year's Eve since I started working wherein I'm not actually at work. For those of us in the Food and Beverage business, tonight is the busiest in the year. Nobody's taking a day-off, nobody's going home early. But this year it's different for me, and I think I'm going to make the most of it by staying at home. Yes, no big party for me in the city!

I went out today. As usual it was pretty hot. I went to this Chinese Restaurant as I do most weekends. It's right in the middle of the city's shopping district but only a handful of people know it's there, although it always gets full. The reason is that it's on the 3rd floor and it's not easy to get to. You can either climb up through a two-storey high escalator, or go through several floors inside the mall.

The food is always great, especially Yum-Cha! I love it so much that sometimes I'm tempted to ask the girl pushing the food trolley to just stand next to my table so I can keep eating without waiting for her to pass by again. Hehehe!

After that I went for a short walk. A lot of barricades were set up in and around the popular vantage points. You see, most of the fireworks goes off over the Harbour Bridge, so people hassle to find a good spot where they can see the show. Add a little alcohol and things can really get out of hand. One good place is at Circular Quay station... but not anymore. As you can see on the photo that I took this afternoon they already set up "idiot-proof-barriers" to keep those drunk idiots from either vomiting on the people below, or from jumping off. Hehehe!

I expect it to be messy in the city, like what happens every year. So this year though I'm not working I decided to just chill out at home. While for most people the New Year is the time to get really drunk and crazy for me it has always been a time to reflect on stuffs... like that day back in school at the end of the term when you get your report card. It's when I think about how well, or how poorly I lived my life during the year.

Happy New Year Everybody!!! - don't drink too much!  :)
